Tied to the Wheel
Though he’s plowed roughly the same furrow for more than 20 years, Bill Kirchen’s brand of dieselbilly/high-octane country has yet to grow stale. Here, with the same rhythm section from 1999’s Raise Up a Ruckus, he offers another set of choice covers and a handful of originals. Red Simpson’s forlorn ballad “Roll Truck Roll” and Blackie Farrell’s “One More Hour of Blues” are vintage Bakersfield country and, oddly enough, fit perfectly well with a straight reading of Dylan’s “Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues” and the lightning-fast newgrass of “How Mountain Girls Can Love” (with drummer Jack O’Dell on lead). The previously unheard Commander Cody era “Truck Stop at the End of the World” is Kirchen at his best — smokin’ Telecaster licks and clever lyrics with a sense of humor. The instrumental “Poultry in Motion” is a showcase for his version of chicken-pickin’, the plucky playing style with roots in his hometown of Washington, D.C.

How did you quit smoking and how much did you smoke before you quit?

Monday, March 8th, 2010

I really want to quit smoking it makes me feel lousy but Im having a hard time.

I smoked for 30 years and it got to about 1-2 packs a day. I had colds and pneumonia it seemed every winter. It got so silly to have to jump up from the table and run outside to have a cig. I would avoid social situations where I could not smoke. Banning smoking in public places was a good motivator for me.
I also had a long time smoker friend who lost a lung. I had to think about that for a year before I decided I could quit.
I chewed the nicorette gum. I chewed it as frequently as I felt the urge to smoke. A cigarette lasts about 8 minutes but the gum can last up to 30.
I chewed it about 6 months and tapered off. I’ve been smoke free for three years and 2 months. I can’t imaging going back.

How can I help my boyfriend quit smoking?

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

My boyfriend has been smoking for almost 3 years now. He probably smokes 2 packs a week.

How can I help him to quit? I want to be supportive and encourage him to do so. I know he gets frustrated and wants to quit but he never seems to do it or take any steps in the right direction. I don’t think he knows where to start.

Be harsh.
If he doesn’t respond well to encouragement point out all the bad things about smoking.
* The devastating effects it can have on your health.
* How it restricts you when you go out.
* How he smells ( well make sure he is crazy over you – unless you want to get jibbed :P )
* The expense of it all.

Every time he doesn’t smoke a packet tell him to put the equivalent of what that would normally cost in a jar. At the end of the month treat yourselves to a smoke free night out, using this money – then see which he prefers.

Hope I helped
Emily

Zero Smoke - 4142

No matter how hard youve tried, or how often youve attempted it, smoking is one of the most challenging and difficult habits to break free from and quit completely. There always seems to be something that draws you back to smoking, regardless of how much willpower you have or what methods you use.

How long does it take to quit smoking?

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

I know each person is different, but about how long does it take for the cravings to go away. I can restraint from a cigarette for 8 hours each day at work, and have gone as long as 12 hours when I was on a trip with students. However, the minute the opportunity arises I’m having a cigarette. I crave the act of smoking much more than the nicotine I recieve from it (nicotine gum makes me crave a cigarette). I’ve tried to quit unsuccessfully and find if I don’t have access to them, the nicotine cravings occur about every 4-6 hours while the craving for a cigarette occurs ever 15-30 minutes. How long would it take for these cravings to disappear?

If you don’t understand the difference between craving a cigarette and craving the nicotine I don’t really know how to explain it to a non-smoker. Sorry.

First of all, your body only needs 3 cigarettes to fulfill its nicotine addiction daily. If you can get through the first three days, you have pretty much quit. The hardest thing about quitting really is the psychological aspects of smoking. After the three days, your biggest craving will come from your psyche wanting to engage in the act of smoking. My suggestion, is as long as you can get past the initial quitting, buy yourself a pack or two of clove cigareetes. You can go through the action of smoking without the nicotine. Plus they smell so gross, that you will soon get past smoking those as well. If I could suggest anything, Zyban was the most help for me to quit. I had tried the patch, nicotine gum, laser treatment, accupressure…when I did the Zyban, there were some side affects, but getting through the first three days of quitting was a breeze in comparison to the last five times I had tried to quit. Good luck!! It really is worth it! PS depending on how long you smoked for, it could take six months to a year for you to stop thinking daily about smoking.
